Millions gather around the Mandala, Maitighar to show
discontentment against the Guthi Bill proposed by the Oli Government in the parliament.
The controversial Guthi Bill directly targets the present tradition of Guthi
which has been facilitating the various Jatras and festivals in the valley. On its
backdrop Guthi tradition is also related with people’s daily lives and livelihood
particularly Newari community which stand as a very good example of a community
driven society.
The bill was proposed to dissolve and discontinue the Guthi corporation which
has been managing all the Guthis in Nepal. The new bill would dissolve all the provision
of the Guthi which has been transcended from hundreds of years to safeguard the
various culture and tradition.
With the enormous blow from the public in social media, the
bill has been withdrawn by the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, and
Poverty Alleviation on June 18 but the people who have been protesting from
last few weeks want it to be cancelled limiting the scope and retrieval of the
bill in future.
Though the bill has shown a lot of aspect of Unity factor in terms of culture
and tradition but on the same the bill has also highlighted a threat of polarization
of communal voice. The Newari community has been voicing the issue of the bill being
a direct attack against their community which has provoked a sense of racialism
and discrimination.
