PM Oli’s New Propaganda for the Election: Nationalism for Cheap Popularity

Amidst, the controversial move of dissolving the parliament by the Prime Minister(PM) KP Sharma Oli on 20 December 2020 huge questions have been raised regarding his decision and party politics. The decision came on  Sunday and  the President dissolved the Parliament as recommended by PM without any consideration to the new amendment of the constitution.  This has brought into lime light a rift of party politic in between the leaders of  Nepal Community party(NCP). It clearly shows the tussle for power in between Oli and his former ally Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda).

More regressively, the nation was surprised when an interview of PM KP Sharma Oli aired on Monday evening on two of the Indian news channels, giving extensive interviews about the move. Both news channels are under the Zee Media Group.

“Zee News channel is the same channel which was banned from Nepal in July 2020, for broadcasting a report on Zee News suggesting Oli’s  close ties with the Chinese ambassador to Nepal.”

The interview of PM Oli on Zee news specifically highlighted issues of border sovereignty, nationalism, culture and identity and boarder issues where other sensitive issues of history were discussed with larger concern to limiting Nepal as a small country in the South Asia. The interview clearly showed a lack of diplomatic etiquettes and conditional news approach from such a media group.

Sudhir Chaudhary the editor of the Zee News, who interviewed the PM was hugely objected in social media show casing lack of VVIP protocol and respect to the Head of the state.

In today’s world of disinformation and fake news, the political culture has been hugely subjected to lack of ethics and other disapprobation where world leaders and politicians have been manipulating information in the name of nationalism and technology. Media Development has not just been subjected to the question of putting right news with the right information but has been hugely questioned for issues of values and practice. This clearly shows whether right or wrong PM Oli seems to be playing the card of Nationalism to manipulate the conditional terms for his election campaign.  Propaganda or not but the PM Oli seems to enjoying his share of popularity with the controversy  of Zee News.
