On March 28, 2025, Kathmandu witnessed a significant pro-monarchy demonstration that escalated into violent clashes between protesters and police, resulting in two fatalities and numerous injuries.
Thousands of demonstrators, advocating for the restoration of Nepal’s monarchy and the re-establishment of the country as a Hindu state, gathered in the capital. The protest turned violent when participants attempted to breach police barricades en route to the parliament building. In response, security forces employed tear gas, water cannons, and batons to disperse the crowd. Tragically, two individuals lost their lives during the confrontation, including a journalist covering the event. Additionally, 17 people sustained injuries, among them three police officers. Authorities imposed a curfew in affected areas to prevent further escalation.
The resurgence of pro-monarchy sentiment stems from widespread public dissatisfaction with Nepal’s political instability and economic challenges since the abolition of the monarchy in 2008. Critics argue that successive governments have failed to deliver on promises of development, leading to increased frustration among citizens.
While the demand for reinstating the monarchy reflects genuine concerns over governance, reverting to a monarchical system may not address the underlying issues. Instead, efforts should focus on strengthening democratic institutions, ensuring accountability, and promoting inclusive economic growth to meet the aspirations of the Nepali people.
