Dr. CK Raut a Madhesi activist has been arrested under a sedition case which is currently being trailed under the Special Court for life term. Raut has been advocating separation of Madhes from Nepal and has been subverting the public against the country.
According to sources Morang District Police filed the case demanding life term for Raut under Section 3 (1) of Crime against State and Punishment Act, 1989.The Section 3(1) states that If someone causes or attempts to cause any disorder with an intention to jeopardise sovereignty, integrity or national unity of Nepal, he/she shall be liable to life imprisonment.
Raut through his books and articles has been advocating independent Madhes and sought separation of the region from Koshi to Mahakali as separate Madhes. He has organized various rally and gathering for disseminating his ideology.
In the past leaders like Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Baburam Bhattarai, Mohan Baidhya, BP Koirala and Ramraja Prasad Singh all have been prosecuted under the same law.
He returned to Nepal in 2011 from the U.S. where he was the central coordinator at the Non Resident Madhes Association and Alliance of Independent Madhes (AIM) registered with the American government.
Born in Mahadeva-7 of Saptari, Dr Chandra Kant Raut has stayed in the U.S. for a long time before returning to Nepal. He had worked for a company that operated under the aegis of the U.S. government. He has received a Bachelor in Electronics Engineering degree from Tribhuvan University, a Master in Information Science and Technology degree from the University of Tokyo, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He is a recipient of Young Engineer Award, Mahendra Vidya Bhooshan, Kulratna Gold Medal and Prof. F. N. Trofimenkoff Academic Achievement Award among others.
