Sex Determination increases abortion rates in Nepal

New statistics and data have revealed that the number of sex determination in hospitals are growing immensely which is directly resulting in abortion of girl child fetus. This tendency has started to showcased the fractioning  in between the  demographic of male to female ratio.

The Kanitpur National Daily reported, “The Prasuti Maternity Thapathali during 72 /73 witnessed the birth of 8772 (m), & 7553 (f), Patan Hospital 3277(m) & 2903(f), Bhaktapur 640(m), & 561(f) and Om hospital 637(m) & 527(f).”
The last population consensus of Nepal (2011)  revealed the total population to be   26,494,504 , comprising 681,252 females and 597,628 males.

The Nepal’s Demographics Profile predicted by Index Mundi  2016 says, ”  The age structure states 0-14 years: 30.93%  where the male children numbers is  4,646,048 and the female children  4,333,105. Similarly, the sex ratio at birth is  1.04 male(s)/female where as from the 0-14 years is 1.07 male(s)/female. ”

According to Civil law ( Muluki Ain) Sex determination is termed illegal and has a provision of imprisonment from  6 months to 2 years if proven guilty.  Since 2002, abortion has been legally permitted in Nepal during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy or up to 18 weeks in cases of rape, incest, fetal malformation or when the woman’s life is endangered.
