It has been 10 days since Prof Dr Govinda KC has been protesting against the new appointment at Institute of Medicine (IoM) at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital with fast-unto-death from January 11, seeking cancellation of the appointment. Dr KC has been demanding Dr Prakash Sayami to be reinstated as the IoM dean who resigned in view of political pressure. Looking at the main issue Dr KC has been against granting affiliation to four proposed medical colleges which proves to be one of the vital questions for where Nepal’s medical industry or profession is going.

On his protest list he has also demanded the resignation of TU vice-chancellor, rector and registrar for their involvement in ‘irregularities’.

With the solidarity the medical doctors and student have staged a nationwide service shutdown, except in emergency wards, since Sunday to express solidarity with Prof Dr KC. Similarly around 200 residential and MBBS students reached Regmi’s official residence at Baluwatar to submit the memorandum and staged two hours of demonstration in front of Regmi’s office on Monday.

Health condition of Dr Govinda KC is deteriorating, as he has started to complain of headache, muscle cramp, chest pain, and increased palpitation since Sunday. The doctors involved in his treatment say if this situation persists, he might be kept under ICU for further treatment.

In view of the protest, the Supreme Court has asked the professionals to resume their services after receiving a written petition against the shutdown and provide medical services to the general public.

The solidarity movement showed by the doctors all over the country since yesterday has left thousands of patients with no option.
