Police personnel cleaning the streets
Police personnel with local volunteers

Kathmandu April 09, 2012:  With the prime minister inaugurating the “Our Kathmandu-Clean Kathmandu” cleanup campaign from April 06, 2012, most of the government official specially the Nepal police personnel have been seen moving around the city with broom and cleaning equipments. A week long campaign has been launched with the motive to reach and empower the will and responsibility of a citizen. Every day most of the streets are filled with government official (Nepal Police) as it has been a compulsion for them to be part of.  The total cost of the campaign has been  estimated to be NRS 20 million where the NRS 5 (maximum price) mask has been quoted NRS 35 and gloves  market price NRS (maximum 10) has been priced NRS 50. High level corruption or carelessness it seems the Nepal Government is ready to pour in public’s money with no supervision.

The Nepal government and Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) started a drive against litterlouts on from last Friday when the prime minister inaugurated the movement. The movement has been hugely supported where as on contrary people are questioning the long run and strategy behind the campaign.

KMC has issued a scheduled where around 10,000 volunteers are expected to participate in the first phase. The volunteers will manage the garbage generated from their society in the local and most prevalent way.

A local resident of Kathmandu ward no 16 said, “The initiation is good by the KMC but at what cost and till when is questionable. When we have the KMC to do all the stuff then why are they involving the Nepal police? I understand it’s our society our responsibility but isn’t it wrong to make it compulsion. Today also when they came in only the police personnel were there nobody else took part. You have to aware and make pubic participate or else it’s just another publicity campaign.”

Writer’s point of view, I was standing and watching when a group of volunteers came in, most of them were police personnel as seen in the video. They came in with cleaning equipment and they pretended to clean. One of the police personnel also complained, due to this campaign we have to wake up at 5:00.
